ThE FUEL Of THE FUTURE
The wood pellet market consists of two primary sectors: industrial wood pellets which are used as a substitute for coal in power plants, and premium pellets used for heating pellet stoves and boilers.
Globally, both sectors have seen enormous growth in the past decade, particularly in the last 4 years, where the market has expanded 10% annually. The global demand has risen from 19.5 million metric tonnes in 2012, to approximately 28 million metric tonnes in 2015.
Over a 15 year period from 2010 to 2025, the average annual increase in demand for industrial wood pellets is expected to be about 2.7 million metric tonnes per year.
The price per tonne in Europe for premium wood pellets is currently in excess of €240 per tonne and this is continuing to rise.
Future demand in Europe is expected to continue to rise due to the new regulations coming into place in 2020. Whilst major growth is expected in Korea & Japan in the 2020’s. The growing global demand plays a pivotal role in the geography of EcoCrops International’s operations, with fully established plants already in Panama, we are set to launch strategic operations in Europe and Asia in 2018 to accommodate local demand and minimising exportation costs.
